In this week’s edition of the I’m Doing It Right bloghop, I’d like to talk about nurturing friendships. I’m guilty of neglecting some of my friendships from time to time simply because there isn’t usually enough time in the week to catch up. Or ever. Thank goodness most of my friends also have kids and/or full-time jobs and totally let me off the hook (probably because they feel guilty of doing the same thing!). But this past week was different. I didn’t exactly have time, but I made time to visit a friend, have a relaxing lunch with another friend, and drink wine with yet another. And I feel better for having done so.

I’m a lucky girl to have hung out with three of my girlfriends in a 10-day period. It’s very rare in my life as it exists these days, and it took a fair amount of effort–I penciled very long to do lists to cram all the chores and errands into a short period of time to free up friends time!

Friends time is the best, don’t you think? It should be on everyone’s to do list.

So, basically, I raced through my list of things I felt completely necessary to do (but probably weren’t in actuality) so I could guiltlessly lounge on my friends’ couches. Ahh, it felt so good to catch up on each others’ lives over a glass of wine or a meal.

Ok, so that’s not what I’d recommend to anyone else, that whole rushing through insane to do lists just to free up fun time, but it’s what works for me. I wish I were better with this guilt thing. I wish I didn’t feel like I am not entitled to friends time unless I work my butt off first. I know it’s wrong to feel that way, but there it is. The point is, I got done all the things I felt I needed to do over the past two weekends, including spending time with my besties.

I’m going to issue myself a challenge: Once a week, I’m going to scribble out one item on my to do list and replace it with a phone call to or date with a friend–Friends time! And I’m not going to feel bad about it at all.

I wrote it here, so now I’m accountable!

What have you done recently that you’d like a pat on the back for having done?

  1. I love the concept of Friends time. I think we’re all better for it when we do make the time and that rocks. Great reminder, girlfriend. :)
